THE BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MALAYSIAN YOUTH COUNCIL

On 23rd July 1948, 75 representatives from various youth organizations gathered at Victoria Institution to form a pro tem committee of the Malaysian Youth Council. At this meeting, Abdul Razak bin Hussein (Prime Minister of Malaysia 1970-1976) was elected as the the Malaysian of Youth Council representative to the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) Conference in Bussels. There the World Assembly of Youth gave recognition to the Malaysian Youth Council as Malaysia’s National Youth Committee.

The provisional youth committee in the meantime began drafting the Constitution of Malaysian Youth Council while the various youth representatives busied themselves with the formation of the various State Youth Council. On 17th November 1948 the state youth council of Penang and Provence Wellesly was formed, becoming the first of the State Youth Councils.

History was made on 9th September in Penang when the Malaysian Youth Council constitution was adopted and the first Executive Committee elected. Mr. FC Arulanondom became the first President of the Malaysian Youth Council. The Malaysia Youth Council was now the national coordinating body of youth in Malaysia. Seven State Youth Councils and four youth organizations then merged and the Malaysian Youth Council was born.

CURRENT MEMBERSHIP

The present membership of MBM comprises of 39 affiliated members, 27 national youth organisations and 12 state youth councils with total membership of 1.9 milion youths.

These Organisation fall into five categories:

    - Tamil Bell Youth Club Malaysia (KBBT)
    - Young Christian Workers (YCW)
    - Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM)
    - Young Methodist Association of Malaysia (Methodist Youth)
    - Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA)
    - Young Thai Association of Malaysia

ii. Uniformed bodies:
    - Malaysian Boy Brigade
    - Malaysian Girls Brigade
    - Girl Guides Association of Malaysia
    - Scouts Federation of Malaysia
    - St. John Ambulance Malaysia

iii. Sosio-economic based:
    - Malaysian Youth Club Association (MAYC)
    - 4B Youth Movement (4B)
    - United Malaysian Youth Movement (GBBM)
    - Youth Malaysian Movement (YMM)
    - Malaysian Youth Hostel Association (MYHA)
    - Felda Youth Council
    - Sabah National Youth Association (SANYA)
    - United National Youth Organisation of Sarawak (SABERKAS)
    - Muslim Girls Malaysia Movement
    - India Muskim Youth Association
    - Malaysian Junior Chamber

iv. Student bodies:
    - The Federation of Malay Student Union (GPMS)
    - National Union of Malaysia Muslim Student (PKPIM)
