TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE CUSTOMS OF THE PORTUGUESE COMMUNITY

Like other Melaka minority communities such as Baba Nyonya and Chetti, the Melaka Portuguese marriage also has its own uniqueness that combines two cultures, in this sense namely East and West. This is because the way of life of the Portuguese people was heavily influenced by the local culture while at the same time, they continue to practice the traditions and customs of Portuguese society itself.

In the Melaka Portuguese wedding customs, several stages will take place starting from the custom of merisik or indirect ascertaining, engagement and then the culminating event is the persandingan wedding ceremony.

There have also been certain taboos in the Melaka Portuguese community in the past about marriage, where every marriage has to last until death, meaning couples are not allowed to divorce or marry another while the spouse is still alive. If divorce does happen, the divorced person is not allowed to marry as long as the ex-husband or ex-wife is still alive. In addition, according to religious law, marriage is only valid if solemnised in church. Thus, compliance with religion is important and if the marriage is done in a place other than the church, it is considered invalid.
