RELIGION

The Portuguese community in Melaka has been practicing Catholic Christianity since the time of their ancestors. They are known as faithful adherents to religious teachings. In most houses of the local Portuguese there is a "shrine of our lady". The Catholic faith was brought by Portuguese soldiers and traders during the era of colonisation of Melaka and remains until today. Although initially met with antagonism from the Protestant Dutch during the Dutch occupation of Melaka, the faith was able to be defended.

Among the old churches built by the Portuguese is St. Paul, also known as ‘Our Lady’. Other Portuguese churches are such as Church of St. Peter, Church of St. Francis, Church of St. Lawrence, Assumption Church, Church of Santa Cruz, Chapel of the Sacred Heart and many others.
