PORTUGUESE HERITAGE GALLERY

GALLERY OVERVIEW

The Portuguese Heritage Gallery, housed in a traditional Kristang house that still stands, showcases the cultural history of the Portuguese Settlement in Malacca. The Portuguese Settlement is located in Ujong Pasir, Malacca District and is home to the Kristang community, a unique ethnic group in Malaysia that derives from a mixture of Portuguese and Malay heritage since the Portuguese rule in Malacca (16th to 17th centuries). In 1933, an 11-hectare area was purchased to create a refuge for the scattered Kristang community. The swampy area was cleared, and 10 wooden houses with earthen floors and thatched roofs were built. Originally known as Kampung Saint John, the village attracted more Kristang communities from other areas of Malacca and developed into one of the main tourist attractions. The gallery features a modest collection of artefacts that cover the history of the Portuguese community in Malaysia. Although the population has been declining due to migration to countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia, particularly Perth, their cultural heritage still lives on.
