THE SUCCESS OF ORANG ASLI

AIN ZURANA ATEM @ ABDULLAH
Ain Zurana Atem bte Abdullah is the first student to obtain a degree among the Temiar women. She was born in Kampung Sendrod, Pos Brooke, Kelantan. She has proven that difficult life experiences will make a person strive until they succeed. All the customary laws that make it difficult and are synonymous with the Orang Asli community must be overcome by today's students to follow in their footsteps and successful steps.

Born on 12 August 1975, she is the fourth child of five siblings. She received her early education at Sekolah Rendah Convent Tanah Rata, Cameron Highland Pahang from grade one to grade six. She continued her education to form one and two at Sekolah Menengah Sultan Ahmad Shah Tanah Rata Cameron Hihgland and form three at Sekolah Menengah Dato Shahbandar Hussain Raub, Pahang. She continued her form four education at Sekolah Menengah Tengku Kudin Raub, Pahang and returned to Sekolah Menengah Sultan Ahmad Shah to complete her education in form five.

Excellent results in the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) examination allowed him to be accepted into Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) for a Bachelor of Design degree. He followed a Postgraduate Education course in Art Education at UiTM and is currently working as a teacher.

DR. AYOB LOS
Born on 13 May 1961 in Kampung Chenderong Kelubi, Sungai Galah, Perak. Received his early education at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Kampung Chenderong Kelubi in 1967. In 1972 he moved to Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (English) Jalan Hospital, Tapah. From 1973 to 1977 he continued his studies at Sekolah Menengah Abdul Hamid Khan and from 1978-1979 he continued his studies at Sekolah Menengah Sains Pulau Pinang. In 1982 he was offered a Medical Course at the Faculty of Medical Sciences on the Penang campus and continued his studies at the Kubang Kerian campus in Kota Bharu, Kelantan until 1987. He was the first Orang Asli graduate to graduate in the field of medical science studies and was the first Medical Doctor among the Orang Asli.

Dr. Ayob Los has served as a medical officer at Ipoh Hospital, Kampar Hospital, Changkat Melintang Hospital and Bota Kanan. He currently holds the position of Head of the Health Clinic Department, Kampar, Perak. He has taken the Family Physician Specialist Course in Malaysia and Australia (MDFB & FRACP) in an effort to increase his knowledge.

Family encouragement and strong spirit are the driving force for Dr. Ayob Los to pursue success as a Medical Doctor. He always adheres to the principle of his life which is ‘If there is a will, there is a way’.

AMRI BIN JAMIL
Amri bin Jamil was born on 6 October 1973 in Dengkil, Sepang, Selangor and is an Orang Asli from the Temuan tribe. He received his early education at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Bukit Tampoi, Dengkil. In 1986-1990 he continued his secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dengkil and obtained rank 1 in the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) Examination

In 1991-1992 he continued his studies at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Polytechnic (POLISAS) in the computer department until he obtained a Certificate in Data Processing. As a result of his hard work, he set foot in the ivory tower at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1995 until he obtained a Bachelor of Information Technology with honors in Computer Science in 1988

He was the first Orang Asli to work at the Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) by holding the position of Information Systems Officer. He is active in associations and is a Committee Member of the MAMPU Welfare and Sports Club, the Orang Asli Graduate Club, the Semananjung Orang Asli Association and a Committee Member of the Bukit Bangkong Village Committee, Dengkil, Selangor.

“IF THE HOUSE IS NOT DISSOLVED, WHO WILL GET THE SAGUNYA” are sacred words and have become his motto in the struggle to achieve his success today.

DATO’ LONG BIN JIDIN
Dato’ Long bin Jidin is an Orang Asli child of Jakun tribe descent and was born on 19 July 1953 in Kampung Kuala Merchong, Pekan, Pahang. He received his early education in grade one in 1962 at Sekolah Kebangsaan Leban Condong. In 1963 he continued his studies at Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu 7, Gombak. In the same year he again moved to Sekolah Kebangsaan Wan Ibrahim, Kuala Lipis, Pahang and lived in the Bukit Abo Dormitory which was reserved for 12 Orang Asli children. In this dormitory he cooked his own food in turns every day.

In 1968, Long continued his education at Sekolah Menengah Setia Wangsa, Kuala Lipis until Form Three and passed with flying colours in the Primary Education Certificate (SRP) Examination in 1970. He took the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) Examination in 1972 and passed with a grade of two. Armed with the qualifications he had, he successfully continued his studies at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 1973 and was the first Orang Asli child to successfully set foot there in the field of Animal Production and Health.

He continued his education by taking the Distance Education Course organized by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) at the Bachelor of Science level from 1990-1996. He was active in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and had held positions such as Chairman of the Malaysian Aboriginal Association (1994), Chairman of the Malaysian Aboriginal Entrepreneurs Association (PASLIM) from 1995-1996, Head of UMNO Youth of the Batu 12 Orang Asli Village branch, Gombak and Head of the 4B Youth Association of Kuala Lipis District. At the national level, he was appointed as a Member of the National Advisory Council for Orang Asli Community Development and a member of the Malaysian National Unity Advisory Panel.

He has been awarded honorary medals such as the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK) in 1989, Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) in 1995, Setia Mahkota Pahang (SMP) in 1998 and Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) which carries the title of Dato’ in 1999.

He was appointed as a Senator in 1997 and has contributed many constructive ideas during parliamentary sessions for the development of the people of this country, especially the Orang Asli community who are still far behind both economically and socially.

DSP RAMLI BIN MOHD NOR
DSP Ramli bin Mohd Nor of Orang Asli Semai descent was born on 1 January 1958 in Batu 12, Gombak, Selangor. He started his schooling at Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (English) Sultan Hishamudin, Kuala Lumpur in 1965 and moved to Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (English) Tunku Putra, Baling, Kedah to follow his father who was working in the Forest Police Force (Senoi Praq). He passed with flying colours in the Grade Five Assessment Examination to enable him to enter the Form One Special Class at Kolej Sultan Abdul Hamid, Alor Setar which brings together students who have achieved excellent results in the State of Kedah.

The year 1975 saw him pass the SPM/MCE Examination with flying colours and successfully continued his studies at the diploma level in the field of General Broadcasting (Public Relations) at UiTM Shah Alam in 1976. He successfully held the position of Probationary Inspector in the Royal Malaysian Police Service in 1984. In 1992 he was appointed to the position of Chief Inspector and was responsible for the Senior Investigating Officer, Gombak District. In 1996 he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) until mid-2003 he was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and was assigned to the Police Training Centre (PULAPOL), Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur.

DSP Ramli tried to improve himself in the busyness of carrying out his duties as a police officer by continuing his studies through the UiTM Off-Campus Course in law and successfully obtained a Bachelor of Laws Degree in 1988.

For DSP Ramli, to achieve progress in line with other races, the Orang Asli themselves must naturally come out of their narrow-minded cocoon and seize every opportunity provided by the government for the development of themselves, society and the country.
