GALLERY OF DEMANG ABDUL GHANI
The Demang Abdul Ghani Gallery showcases the unique architecture of a traditional Malay house believed to have been built by Penghulu Abdul Majid, a tycoon from Palembang, in 1831. The Penghulu or Demang at that time was a respected community leader, acting as a “little king”. This house was built without the use of nails, featuring six main rooms: anjung, serambi, rumah ibu, pelantar, kitchen, and two special lofts for women.
Apart from being a place to live, this house was the village administration centre and a meeting place to discuss community affairs. Three generations of penghulu once lived in this house: Penghulu Abdul Majid (1831-1834), Demang Abdul Ghani bin Abdul Majid (1834-1934) and Penghulu Mat Natar bin Abdul Ghani (1934-1978).
In order to preserve our national heritage, Melaka State of Government with the aid of Melaka Museum of Corporation (PERZIM) has taken over the house and turned it into the Gallery of Demang Abdul Ghani in 2011.
