TAN SRI DATO’ KURNIA JASA OTHMAN BIN TALIB

Tan Sri Dato' Kurnia Jasa Othman bin Talib was born on 12 June 1906 in Kampung Teja, Kota Baru, Perak. Educated at Anderson School, Ipoh before continuing his studies at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, Perak. In 1926 he joined the ‘Malay Administration Service’ (MAS) and then the ‘Malayan Civil Service’ (MCS) in 1939.
After graduating, he began serving as the Perlis State Secretary from 1948 to 1949. He was later appointed as the Perlis State Secretary from 1948 to 1949. He was then appointed as the Perak State Secretary from 1949 to 1953. In 1953, he was appointed as the Deputy Menteri Besar of Perak until 1957. After the end of World War II in 1950, Tan Sri Dato’ Kurnia Jasa Othman was sent to England several times to learn the ins and outs of the general election process after the end of World War II before taking the ‘Devonshire Course for Senior Officer’ course in 1951 and studying Parliamentary procedures in 1954.
Tan Sri Dato’ Kurnia Jasa Othman then served as Chief Minister of Melaka from 31 August 1957 to 31 May 1959.
Tan Sri Dato’ Kurnia Jasa breathed his last on 9 September 1984 at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital at the age of 77 due to liver cancer. His body was buried at the Bukit Chandan Cemetery, Kuala Kangsar, Perak. He is survived by his wife Nik Rafeah Alang Ahmad and six children, three girls and three boys.
