VOLUNTEER SERVICE-UNITED NATIONS
BRIEF HISTORY
The importance of utilizing volunteers in United Nations development activities dates back to 1961 as recognized in resolution 849 (XXXII) by the UN Economic and Social Council ((ECOSOS). Several years later, a comprehensive study undertaken in consolation with UN agencies, volunteer services, youth organization and some developing countries fully documented and supported the creation of volunteer programme within the United Nations.
The idea of creating an international corps of volunteers, as an organ of the United Nations, was officially raised on 31 July 1969 by ECOSOS. In its resolution 1444 (XLVII) ECOSOS requested the UN Secretary-General to explore the feasibility of creating an international corps of volunteers for development.
MAJOR OBJECTIVES
a. To contribute to dvelopment efforts by providing an additional source of qualified manpower.
b. To offer to the UN system and member states the Energytic and Catalytic contribution of young profrssional who are willing to work under volunteer condition of modest Remuneration.
c. To promote optional activities to increase effective participation in development.
d. To provide assistance to and to co-operate with domestic development service organisation at both National and Regional levels.
e. To provide an opportunity for young professional from all nations particularly from developing countries, in the spirit of TCDC- to contribute to and gain experience in UN-related and nations development programme.
f. To increase opportunities for young people to be involved in and to learn about development and this to increase understanding and co-operation.
