RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE FIRST ASEAN MEETING TO THE ASEAN MINISTERAL MEETING ON YOUTH

On behalf of the youths of ASEAN, we the delegations of the First ASEAN Youth Meeting from Negara Brunei Darussalam, Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia, Republic of the Philippines, Republic of Singapore and the Kingdom of Thailand, after due consideration and deliberation on the paper entitled  " ASEAN Youth Development Strategy Towards The Year 2000 and Beyond (Common Interest and Responsivity) " and plan of " Action of Asean Youth Development " hereby submit the following recommendations for consideration by the ASEAN ministerial meeting on Youth.

  1. To urge the ASEAN ministerial meeting on youth of officially declare the 8th of August as the ASEAN Youth Day, with the following objectives:

-           To strengthen mutual benefit on youth ASEAN friendship and solidarity.

-           To exchange ideas, views and experiences to exchange ASEAN awareness among ASEAN youth in anticipating the challenges of the 21st Century.

-           To further develop the common perception of ASEAN point of view on human recource development for youth.

-           To identify the ASEAN youth problems relating to understanding in cooperation, education and training, economic problems of unemployment, low income and poverty, lack of awsreness on environmental issues , etc.

  1. In commemoration of ASEAN Youth Day, an annual meeting of ASEAN youth shall take place in member countries on a rotational basis.

 

  1. To strengthen the committee for ASEAN Youth Cooperation (CAYC) in the areas youth programme development and recognition through national regional and international programmes: thus, enabling it to play a more dynamic and constructive role in the regional youth development.

 

  1. To encourage more young people to participate in their national Non-Government Organisations (NGO) with the support of their respective governments.

 

  1. To encourage the formation of an ASEAN Youth Basic within the ASEAN Secretariat as an instrument for the development of regional cooperative programme.

 

  1. To involve NGOs in the formulation of an ASEAN Youth charter as a guideline for youth development.

 

  1. To establish an " Institute for ASEAN Youth Studies " which will conduct research into youth development requirements for regional needs, education context, and also to serve as a regional youth resource centre and regional youth networking system.
