COMMONWEALTH YOUTH PROGRAM
BRIEF HISTORY
The possibility of the Commonwealth pooling resources and working together to support national youth programmes was first at a Commonwelth Heads of Government Meeting in Singapore in 1969.
A Series of regional seminars on the topic of youth involvement in development followed and led to a Special Ministerial Meeting in Lusaka, Zambia in 1973 whice drafted a plan for a Commonwealth Youth programme and recommended its adoption to the Commonwealth Heads of Government. They gave their approval at Ottawa, Canada later that year.
Commonwealth Youth Programme's headquarters is based at Commonwealth Secretariat, London. Commonwealth Youth Affairs Council Meeting is done in Commonwealth countries by voluntary offer.
OBJECTIVES
1. To encourage and support the active perticipation of youth in yhr process of National Development.
2. to give recognition to the contribution made by youth to the economic, social and cultural development of the society.
3. To seek to eliminate unemployment and to elleviate ill effects.
4. To provide opportunities or increasing international understanding among youth.
5. To promote and encourage any activities in further more of the foregoing abjectives.
VILLAGE YOUTH HAPPY TO RECEIVE COMMONWEALTH YOUTH AWARD
BREIF HISTORY
The Commonwealth Youth Award is prize offered by the Commonwealth Secretariat in London under its Commonwealth Youth Programme. Every year, five awards are given to Commonwealth member countries throughout the world.
The award will be grated to youth group for programs which they have organized to benefit youth. The programs organized by the youth group in quistion will be nominated by the national ministries dealing with youth affairs in the respective Commonwealth countries.
Briefly the objectives of the award are:
i. To serve as a form of recognition and reward for contributions made by teams of youth (for this purpose the age group has been seat at 15 - 24 years) to national development of their country.
ii. To recognize the success of youth working in small teams (usually between 16 - 20 members) and to inspire other youth participate in such groups.
iii. To promote cooperation and exchanges of ideas between youth of Commonwealth countries.
The Award shall be given in the form of cash prize amounting to 1,000-pound sterling. In addition, every team member is to be presented with a certificate and a memento.
For the first time in the years, the Malaysian Flag was present among the five countries whice were awsrded the prize. tHis success was achieved by the group of 20 boys and girls from the Kampung Seronok Branch 4B Youth Movement of Bayan Lepas. Pulau Pinang for their 'Youth Entrepreneurship Program'.
An award presentation ceremony took place on 14th August 1991 in Kampung Seronok, Bayan Lepas, Dr. Devendra Agochiya from India, the Director of Commonwealth Youth Program in Asia was invited to present the prize to Dr. Syed Azman Haji Syed Ahmad, the Chairman of the Kampung Seronok Branch of the 4B Youth Movement. In addition, every member of the group also received a certificate and a memento.
According to Tuan Haji Adnan Haji Abdul Wahab, the Director of the Department of Youth and Sport in penang, the 'Youth Entrepreneurship Program' which won the award consist of projects involving freshwater fish rearing, landscaping enterprises, restaurant, printing shop, car repair and tayloring workshop, as well small shop Cultural Complex for tourists.
The Kampung Seronok Branch of the 4B Youth Movement has already won the Penang State level " Successful Youth Award " in 1987, 1988, 1989 as well national award in 1989.
