THE ADMIRALS (LAKSAMANA) OF MALACCA

In line with position of Melaka as a reknown harbour and the most powerful maritime kingdom, the position of the Laksamana was created. The appointed and the role, initially were incorporated with other posts. During the reign of Sultan Mudzaffar Shah, the post Seri Bijaya DiRaja was created to perform the duties similar to the Laksamana. Tun Hamzah (Dato Bongkok) was among the earliest to hold this position. However, the contribution’s colour and chivary of Dato’ Laksamana Hang Tuah were highly regarded in Melaka. The Laksamana discharged cruel and military duties. He was responsible for the save navigator in the Melaka water from enemy infiltrators and privacy. In discharging his duties, he was equipped with the necessities such as weapons, the navy, experienced Orang Laut and the like. Among others, the Laksamana assumes the role of:

  • Admiral of the Navy
  • Guarding and overseeing official functions
  • Providing security of Sultan
  • Ensuring the safe navigator at sea
  • Protecting to the Bendahara during proceeding
  • Safeguarding the defence of the Sultanate
  • Official envoy and the highest representee of the state in foreign countries
  • Arranging the security measures and welfare for the dignitaries and guests of the Sultanate.

THE ADMIRALS OF MALACCA

  1. Tun Hamzah - First person to carry out the functions of admiral
  2. Hang Tuah - First person to be appointed as Admirals
  3. Hang Jebat / Hang Kasturi - When Hang Tuah was under detention
  4. Khoja Hassan - Son in law of Hang Tuah
  5. Hang Nadim - Son in law of Hang Tuah

THE DUTIES OF LAKSAMANA

1. Commander of all fleets at sea 2. Controller and supervises of State Protocol
3. Responsible of guarding the Sultan
4. Responsible of safeguarding of sea routes
5. Responsible of defence of the safe
6. Responsible of the protection of Bendahara (Prime Minister) during judicial hearing
7. Required to act as envoy in diplomat
8. Responsible for the safety of foreign dignitaries
