STADIUM HANG TUAH
The first stadium was built in Melaka is Hang Tuah Stadium. Its original name was the Kubu Stadium which is located in the centre of Melaka City. Initially, the stadium was the original site of Melaka Railway Station connecting Melaka railway to Pulau Sebang which had started its service in December 1905.
Kubu Stadium was officiated in 1954 by Mr. GEC Wisdom. At that time he was the President Commissioner of Melaka, President of Municipal Council and President of Melaka Stadium. Previously, it was managed by the Melaka Stadium Committee. On 31st August 2001, the name of the stadium was changed to Hang Tuah Stadium. It was inaugurated by His Excellency Tun Datuk Seri Utama Syed Ahmad al-Haj Mahmud Syed Shahabuddin, the sixth Governor of Melaka (1984-2004).
Initially, the stadium was managed by Melaka Historical City Council (MBMB) until it was handed to the Melaka Stadium Corporation on 1st June 2005. Generally, the stadium covers the area of 8 acres; measuring 105m x 68m field area. The stadium can accommodate the capacity of 15,000 spectators at a time.
HANG JEBAT SPORTS COMPLEX DEVELOPMENT
Melaka continues to develop sports on par with other states in Malaysia. Hence, the idea to establish the Stadium Hang Jebat was triggered by YAB Datuk Seri Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam, Chief Minister of Melaka in 2001. The groundbreaking of the stadium was initiated on 1 September 2001 and took about four years to accomplish. It began its operation for the first time on 16 September 2004 under the management of Melaka Stadium Corporation. The stadium was officiated by His Excellency Tun Datuk Seri Utama Mohd Khalil bin Yaakob, the sixth Governor of Melaka on 25 September 2005.
This two-storey-roofed stadium has an area of 60 acres or 242,811.39 square metres, can accommodate about 40,000 people at a time and in accordance to the international specifications and standards.
The most impressive achievement for the people of Melaka was, Hang Jebat Stadium was chosen as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the prestigious sports in Malaysia, 13th Malaysian Games (SUKAN MALAYSIA XIII), in Melaka 2010, which was held from the 10th to 19th June 2010.
ORGANIZING THE MALAYSIAN GAMES (SUKMA XIII, MELAKA 2010)
The 13th Malaysian Games was held from 10th to 19th June 2010 in Melaka, UNESCO World Heritage City. A total of 15 contingents from all over the country had gathered in the state to participate in the biggest sports events in Malaysia.
The 13th Malaysian Games, Melaka 2010 was officiated by His Excellency Tun Datuk Seri Utama Mohd Khalil bin Yaakob, the Governor of Melaka on June 12, 2010 while the closing ceremony was officiated by the YAB. Datuk Seri Utama Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia on 19th June 2010 at Stadium Hang Jebat, Hang Jebat Sports Complex, Melaka.
A total of 33 events were contested in the 13th Malaysian Games, Melaka 2010 which were participated by 10,000 athletes in various events.
